Our December issue is distributing with more great content for surveyors. Our cover feature details the explosion of underground utility installation around our world. One company is using Trimble gear and software to make the process better.

The second feature is another fascinating installment from Jerry Penry, this time about an aptly-named valley in the Sandhills of Nebraska. Jerry says the valley was the site of some of the most egregious fraud in the entire PLSS. More great articles in the new issue, which I discuss in Spotlight below.

View the complete new issue by clicking on the cover to the right, or scroll down for the individual articles. And don't hesitate to contact me if you have a story you'd like to share.

Until next time,

Thought Leader: Licensure and Professionalism in Eastern Europe
The Eastern European nation of Romania lies with the Black Sea to the southeast and Hungary and Ukraine to the north. From 1947 to 1989 Romania was a Communist state that made the difficult transition to free market status in 1989. Nicolae Ceausescu, after 21 years as president and virtual ....

Decided Guidance: Bryant v. Blevins Part 3 -The Dissenting Opinion
Okay, we are going right to the barbershop this month as I don my flaming barrister's wig to respectfully armchair the honorable Justice Mosk's dissenting opinion. This is like playing checkers against myself because I agree with Justice Mosk's on certain points in his dissent but I ended up in a ....

Vantage Point: More Questions than Answers
Some of the messages that find their way to me by email (and sometimes by phone) pose questions that are far more complicated than the inquirer anticipates. Recently a brief two sentence question (couched in an only slightly longer message) required me to write many paragraphs to ....

Survey Valley
The Sandhills region of Nebraska is known, above ground, for its hay and cattle production and, below, for the vast amounts of pure water in the Ogallala Aquifer. It is home to the Kinkaid Act of 1904 which increased the longstanding 160-acre ....

Reflections on One October, Tom Petty and Land Title Surveys
Sitting, as I write this column, in the eighteenth airport I have been through in 2017, my thoughts wander from the mundane (what to eat) to crises (North Korea). What will probably be referred to as One October took place a week ago tonight. Yesterday I spoke on health and safety in the ....

feature Regular contributor Larry Trojak weighs in with how a Utah construction company is improving its bottom line with GNSS technology. In my opinion it won't be long before machine control will be the norm and not the exception. We keep hearing about the looming shortage of skilled tradesmen, and technology will help solve the shortage.

Elsewhere in the new issue, you'll find interesting articles from our usual contributors. First is Part 3 of Jason Foose's dissection of an important court case. FEMA expert Wendy Lathrop discusses the business opportunities presented by being an expert in flood matters. ALTA expert Gary Kent reflects on the awful event that occured in Las Vegas, the passing of Tom Petty, and of course, land title surveys. Mike Pallamary provides details about the establishment of a well-deserved Final Point, this time in California. And don't forget Dave Lindell's brain-twisting Test Yourself.

And finally Bob Foster relates his recent trip to Eastern Europe and contrasts licensing and professionalism there and here. And while you might question an article about far away countries, we present them as educational additions to our own discussions about these vital subjects.
