Our May issue is distributing, and so far, a story about scanning an old fort in Oregon is leading the Hit Parade. Close behind is Gene Roe's recap of the recent SPAR conference. Our team recently attended the Riegl user conferece in China, and a short report about that can be found in Spotlight below. Next is a Lathrop report on a controversial Executive Order establishing a new Federal Flood Risk Management Standard.

Of particular interest to me in the new issue is the lead cover feature about how a Colorado surveyor found the right courthouse person to locate "hidden" records to prove how a parcel was accessed in the 1800s. My favorite story about courthouse personnel involves a little old lady who would not allow anyone to touch a valuable old vellum map, but would mercilessly fold it to make copies. We begged to be allowed to make a mylar of the entire map, all to no avail, and winced everytime we watched her wrestle the priceless map onto the copier. Our Colorado surveyor had much better luck.

Responding to requests, in addition to the flippy, we are now processing the entire issue as one giant PDF. A 60Mb file of the current issue is available here. To see the flippy you can click on the magazine cover to the right, or scroll down for individual articles. As always, please don't hesitate to contact me if you've got a surveying story you'd like to share.

Until next time,

feature Our team traveled to China last week to take in RIEGL's Hong Kong and Guangzhou International User Conferences. During the height of the building boom, it was said that China developed the urban equivalent of Rome every two months. They now have the need to monitor and map an astounding variety of infrastructure assets and have embraced LIDAR technologies for the task. Look for a story in a future publication with fascinating insights into how mapping is done in China.

RIEGL used the conference to present several new developments, including the RIEGL VUX-1 Series of LiDAR Sensors for KINEMATIC Laser Scanning: VUX-1HA High Accuracy, VUX-1 UAV, and the VUX-1LR Long Range; the VP-1 ultra-compact, fully integrated helipod for Airborne Laser Scanning with VUX-1LR sensor, camera solution, and IMU/GNSS; the RIEGL VMQ-450 Mobile Laser Scanning System, significant software upgrades and more.
