57th Meeting of the U.S. Civil GPS Service Interface Committee (CGSIC)

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Coast Guard Navigation Center (NAVCEN) will host the 57th meeting of the Civil Global Positioning System Service Interface Committee (CGSIC), Sept. 25-26, 2017, at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland, Oregon. CGSIC meetings are free and open to the public.  

DOT serves as the civil lead for the GPS and chairs the CGSIC in this capacity. NAVCEN is assigned duties as deputy chair and executive secretariat for the CGSIC. 

Subcommittees of the CGSIC for Timing, State and Local Government, International Information, and Survey, Mapping, and Geosciences will hold meetings September 25, and a summary of these meetings will be presented to the CGSIC plenary session September 26. 

The keynote speaker for this year's plenary session will be the Honorable Andre Hentz, Department of Homeland Security, acting deputy under secretary for science and technology.   

Presentations this year include: 

  • Operational status and modernization of the GPS constellation of satellites
  • U.S. space-based Position, Navigation and Timing policy
  • GPS augmentation systems
  • Information related to U.S. engagement with other international Global Navigation Satellite Systems as well as a variety of applications of the use of GPS

The Coast Guard’s Navigation Center provides the following services and information to promote the safety, security, and efficiency of U.S. waterways and civil GPS users:

  • Operates the Nationwide Differential GPS System
  • Operates the Long Range Identification and Tracking business helpdesk
  • Operates the Nationwide Automatic Identification System
  • Publishes Notices to Mariners and the Light List
  • Disseminates navigation information through 24/7 operations center and the NAVCEN website
  • Manages the Integrated Aids to Navigation Information System
  • Manages electronic charting portfolios for U.S. Coast Guard units
  • Serves as the primary U.S. government interface with GPS users (except aviation and military)
  • Receives and coordinates investigation of GPS outage reports 

Civilian non-aviation users can submit GPS-related inquiries or report signal interference/degradation problems to the U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Center online at: https://www.navcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=gpsUserInput or to the 24 hour watch desk at 703-313-5900. 

Civil aviation users should contact the Federal Aviation Administration for GPS user support within the United States. The GPS Operations Center at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, is the lead in the Department of Defense for operational issues and questions concerning military use of GPS.
