Topcon Partners with BioBus to Offer Aquila Hybrid SEM Microscope Print E-mail

One-of-a-kind optical, scanning electron microscope to tour nationally

Livermore, Calif. – November 1, 2011 – Topcon Positioning Systems (TPS) is providing its unique Aquila hybrid microscope (optical and scanning electron microscope -- SEM) for use on the BioBus, a mobile education laboratory.

The BioBus, the creation of Cell Motion Laboratories, Inc., is a non-profit organization dedicated to “bringing fun and excitement of scientific experimentation to all people,” according to Dr. Ben Dubin-Thaler, the organization’s founder.

Topcon introduced the Aquila hybrid SEM to the North American market in July.

TPS, a global leader in precision optical and automation systems for survey, construction, engineering and agriculture applications, introduced the Aquila hybrid scope “to put the versatility of an optical microscope and the power of an SEM into a simple, portable, and affordable package,” said, Ray O’Connor, TPS president and CEO.

Dr. Dubin-Thaler said, “The BioBus makes it possible for students to explore the world around them using research-grade microscopes and make discoveries under the guidance of professional scientists.

“With Topcon’s Aquila hybrid scope, students can quickly view an object at 30x magnification (optical) to 50,000x as an SEM. This allows us to go beyond the limit of what is normally seen in this mobile environment. The Aquila hybrid SEM will be the focal point of the BioBus; it is the ‘crown jewel,’ so to speak.”

Erik Truxal, Aquila sales manager for North America, said, “The BioBus is the perfect setting to demonstrate the simplicity and versatility of the Aquila. Partnering with Cell Motion Laboratories will bring the wonders of the SEM world to students and the general public across the nation.”

The BioBus plays host to more than 10,000 students nationwide annually; an additional 10,000 pass through the “lab on wheels” at public events.

More information on the BioBus can be seen at www.biobus.org. More information on Aquila hybrid SEM is located at www.topconsem.com.
