GIS Positioned to Effect Visible Change in Society with Mobile Technology and the Greening of Our Uninhabited World

Aurora, Colo. – June 23, 2011 – Technical professionals planning to earn a degree in geographic information systems (GIS) will want to familiarize themselves with international GIS technology firm ESRI. Known for creating geographic technology that connects cultures and societies, ESRI continues to demonstrate that the job market for true GIS professionals is strong and growing.

According to Michael Gould, Ph.D., the director of education for ESRI, the job market is quite strong for people who are familiar with larger enterprise GIS solutions. He recently heard an estimate of 2,000 open GIS positions in the U.S., mainly in Washington D.C., Colorado and California, and noted that as more geoprocessing functionality moves to the Web, the demand for true GIS professionals to keep all these sites running will be even stronger.

Guidance from a GIS Guru
Is a career in GIS right for you? ESRI’s Michael Gould recently shared his thoughts for career success in GIS with American Sentinel University. Read Gould’s insight about the future of GIS technology, what companies are looking for in GIS job candidates, and more at http://www.americansentinel.edu/blog/2011/06/03/words-with-a-gis-education-guru/.

American Sentinel University Professor Gabriel Schmidbauer says, “ESRI is the Microsoft of the GIS industry. That’s why American Sentinel strongly focuses on teaching ESRI software and developing sound technical skills to position GIS students for success in the industry.”

ESRI software is used by more than 350,000 organizations worldwide, including most federal agencies and national mapping agencies, 45 of the top 50 petroleum companies, all 50 U.S. state health departments, most forestry companies, and more than 24,000 state and local governments. The result: high demand for professionals with GIS degrees.

“ESRI has been the main software player within the GIS industry in the U.S. and much of the world and has by far been the most popular professional GIS software package in the U.S.,” says Professor Schmidbauer. “We put an emphasis on ESRI software – ArcGIS ARCVIEW 9.2 and above. Graduates of the Associate of Science Geographic Information Systems and Bachelor of Science Geographic Information Systems programs are prepared to sit for the ESRI ArcGIS associate-level certification test. Our students are ready to jump into the GIS industry and are positioned to have lucrative careers.”

American Sentinel is one of the few higher education institutions to offer two dedicated undergraduate GIS degrees, not just certificates, which have been offered for more than four years. The university's GIS associates and bachelors programs teach fundamental business and information technology skills and the specifics of geographic information systems.

American Sentinel’s programs prepare students for entry into the GIS field, but also provide training in information systems that benefit other business areas.
