FARO Announces the Release of the New SCENE Software for the FARO Laser Scanner Print E-mail
Written by FARO
Tuesday, 05 October 2010

FARO, the world’s leading provider of portable measurement and imaging solutions, has announced the availability of SCENE 4.7, the latest version of its scan processing software for the FARO Laser Scanner.

Oliver Bürkler, Technical Product Manager Laser Scanner at FARO Europe, explains the most relevant benefits of the new release:

What is the most significant innovation of the new 4.7 version?
SCENE 4.7 incorporates the new “one-click” Web-Share functionality (www.faroeurope.com/webshare). The SCENE Web-Share feature allows for easy and secure sharing of scan data via the Internet. Scanned images can now be put on the Internet by just a click of a button, thus enabling users like engineers architects, to share scan information with their customers, suppliers and partners without the need of additional software. This will help customers improve the efficiency of their projects.

How do these factors differentiate the FARO software from competitors’ software?
The new Web-Share functionality is natively built into the SCENE software and requires no additional software to publish the scan data on the web. Today there is no company on the market able to offer this package at these conditions.

How can customers improve their processes using the new version? And how does it impact the customer day-by-day activity?
SCENE is based on a completely new software foundation which enables us to offer a 64 bit version as well as a version for 32 bit Windows systems. The new 64 bit architecture extends the usable memory eliminating the limitations given by a 32bit operating system. This allows for a more efficient point cloud handling and visualization.

What are the other most interesting features of the new release?
A feature that really helps customers in their day-by-day activity is the new “Documentation object”. Users can now mark points of interest in the scan data, adding comments and attaching any kind of document to the scans. This allows extending point clouds with additional information using hyperlink technology. Finally the new powerful Quick View provides all tools to work on the scan data in undistorted 360° visualization.

What about the usability? Is there some innovation for the customers?
The new version presents an improved user interface with better structured menus, tabbed windows and new tool boxes. This allows the user to apply the software with less training effort and ensure more efficiency at the same time. SCENE is the scan processing software for the FARO Laser Scanner. How much do new laser scanner customers have to pay to benefit of the innovations of the new version? Our SCENE software is delivered with every FARO Laser Scanner at no additional costs.

Can you please provide some details about upgrade possibility for current customers?
Current users of a 4.X version of SCENE will be provided with an upgrade at no cost. Our customer service department will be glad to assist all the customers that wish to get a free upgrade.

What about customers using an older version of the SCENE software?
They also have the possibility to upgrade. Also in this case our customer service department is the right point of contact for more information on that.

SCENE is specifically designed for the FARO Laser Scanner. SCENE processes and manages scanned data both efficiently and easily by using the automatic object recognition, scan registration and positioning. SCENE can also colourise scans. The software is extremely user-friendly and generates high-quality data in next to no time. All you have to do is check the results at the end. Once SCENE has prepared the scan data, you can commence evaluation and further processing right away. Thus you have a whole series of easy-to-use functions at your disposal – from simple measuring to 3D visualization through to meshing and exporting into various point cloud and CAD formats. Scan projects can now be published on a web server by the push of a button. The new Web-Share feature allows for easy access of the laser scans with a standard internet browser.
