ERDAS Announces Update to Free ECW JPEG2000 Plug-in for ArcGIS® Desktop Products
Written by ERDAS
Thursday, 22 May 2008
Norcross, GA -- ERDAS announces the release of ArcGIS® 8.x and 9.x ECW JPEG 2000 Plug-in 4.1. This updated plug-in provides seamless interoperability with ArcGIS desktop products and the ECWP high-performance streaming imagery protocol. The ECWP protocol allows users to access massive amounts of image data (1000s of gigabytes or more) easily over the internet or intranet.
JPEG 2000 is the non-proprietary standard image format for the International Organization of Standardization (ISO), supported by most major geospatial applications. ECW is an image compression format developed by ERDAS.
With this updated plug-in, ArcGIS desktop products can now read ECW/ECWP files, enabling users to utilize the benefits of Image Web Server (IWS) within the ArcGIS desktop environment. IWS is a high-speed, specialized server application that efficiently distributes large volumes of geospatial image data. IWS solves the infrastructure congestion problems associated with deploying large amounts of image data, empowering users to quickly access the information they need.
“We are excited to offer this free plug-in to our customers that are using ArcGIS desktop products,” said Mladen Stojic, Senior Vice President, Product Management and Marketing, ERDAS. “The ArcGIS 8.x and 9.x ECW JPEG 2000 Plug-in 4.1 ensures that ArcGIS desktop products will effectively handle JPEG2000 and ECW images, providing a means to communicate between both vendors’ applications.”
To learn more about the IWS benefits included in the free plug-in, please register for Huge Images? Too Many Users? No Problem!, a webinar highlighting IWS on Wednesday, May 28, 2008 at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. (EDT). To register, please visit www.erdas.com.
