BAE Systems Signs Contract with Ordnance Survey to Extend Data Collection Capabilities Print E-mail
Written by BAE Systems

SAN DIEGO – BAE Systems has announced that Ordnance Survey®, the national mapping agency of Great Britain, has ordered multiple copies of BAE Systems’ SOCET for ArcGIS® product.  The decision follows a European Union procurement process by Ordnance Survey to find a 3D data editing and capture tool that works directly with ESRI’s Geodatabase and supports versioning and attribution.  The SOCET for ArcGIS solution has enabled the Ordnance Survey to maintain their high-level photogrammetric production workflows with SOCET SET while allowing them to capture and edit 3D national map data in stereo directly in their enterprise Geodatabase.

Mark Tabor, technical advisor of Photogrammetry for Ordnance Survey said, “As part of a major investment program, which will result in new processes and systems for the collection, storage and maintenance of Ordnance Survey data, Ordnance Survey has chosen SOCET for ArcGIS to be its key photogrammetric capture tool.  It is critical that we have the capability to maintain and update the National Geospatial Database in an Arc environment.”

“SOCET for ArcGIS now lets Ordnance Survey maximize the benefits of using two industry leading products- SOCET SET and ArcGIS,” said John Allan, BAE Systems’ director of sales and marketing/Europe, Middle East and Africa.  “It allows them to meet their goal of having a single edit and capture environment using ArcGIS tools across their whole organization, from the field surveyor through to the photogrammetrist.”

Key to the success of SOCET for ArcGIS is its ability to “3D enable” all the standard ArcGIS tools, including any specialist capabilities developed using the ArcGIS SDK.  These can all be used transparently in the high-precision stereo edit and capture workflows of SOCET SET.  The key benefit of this is that all data capture and editing in the photogrammetric environment can be customized using the advanced data models and topology rules found in ArcGIS.  Additionally, the SOCET for ArcGIS extension to ArcMap 8.3 and 9.0 provides users the added power of customization, Geodatabase versioning, and attribution.

Ordnance Survey’s decision to modernize their system was based on increased demand for their digital and printed GIS products.  The move to adopt a full-scale ESRI Geodatabase gives users throughout the organization, from field surveyors to photogrammetrists, equal access to a single, efficient data repository.  Since SOCET SET is already used extensively at Ordnance Survey, new users will be integrated easily as SOCET SET becomes the cornerstone for future photogrammetric data collection.

BAE Systems is the developer and supplier of SOCET SET® and SOCET GXP™ software as well as other innovative solutions widely used by commercial, defense and intelligence customers for mapping, photogrammetry, geospatial analysis and image analysis.
