Windmill Software publishes free newsletter for PC-based data collection
Written by Windmill Software
Wednesday, 07 July 2004
Over 25000 people are now receiving Monitor (ISSN 1472-0221), the free newsletter for PC-based data collection
Monitor is sent by e-mail every month. It is written in an easy-to-understand style and includes
* articles on interfacing instruments to a computer, such as: GPS receivers, sonar and temperature monitors
* tips on collecting spatial and attribute data
* examples of applications of computerised data acquisition, including: seafloor mapping and remote sensing
* sources of more information on GIS and other topics
Published by Windmill Software, Monitor was launched in August 1998 and mailed it to just 42 people. Very soon after the publishers started offering their Windmill suite of data acquisition software free to everyone signing up. At that time it cost non-subscribers 345 GB pounds to purchase the software - so not surprisingly a great many people took advantage and started using Windmill. In fact, over 17000 copies of Windmill have been given away!
With overflowing e-mail in-boxes Windmill is very conscious of the need to keep the newsletter relevant or it will simply be deleted, or worse still marked as spam. They conduct yearly surveys to check how satisfied subscribers are, and what topics they would like covered in Monitor in the future.
