Garmin(R) Adds GPS Technology to Pocket PCs Via cf Que(TM) Module
Written by Garmin
Tuesday, 04 May 2004
OLATHE, Kan.-- Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ:GRMN) , today announced that the company will offer its Que application with a new CompactFlash(R) GPS module that is optimized for popular Pocket PC handhelds.
The cf Que 1620 is a module featuring Garmin's new Que software application, which delivers high-performance GPS location, mapping and turn-by-turn navigation capabilities to Pocket PC devices.
"The cf Que is a comprehensive GPS module that offers ample memory and intuitive operation," said Gary Kelley, Garmin's director of marketing. "Users don't need to sacrifice internal memory or their preferred applications to get complete navigation capabilities on their Pocket PC, because all of the map data can be stored on the module."
The cf Que 1620 utilizes Garmin's Que software application to transform popular Pocket PC units into portable navigation devices. Que technology provides Pocket PC users with location awareness, address and points-of-interest lookup features, electronic mapping, automatic route generation, configurable road/area avoidance, off-route recalculation, and turn-by-turn directions with voice guidance. Another key capability within the Que application is the ability to navigate to an address stored within the PDA's Contacts database.
The cf Que 1620 delivers a configurable worldwide basemap that includes highways, major streets, rivers, lakes, coastal waters and significant borders for North/South America, Europe, Africa and/or the Pacific Rim. With 64 MB of internal memory, the cf Que 1620 can store detailed map data from Garmin's exclusive line of MapSource(R) cartography. The standard package includes MapSource City Select(R) street-level data, delivering to Pocket PC users the benefits of comprehensive mapping information and turn-by-turn routing for the U.S. and Canada. Users can also access detailed backcountry contour maps, digital maps of many of America's best fishing lakes and electronic charts for offshore navigation via optional MapSource CDs.
Unlike most GPS peripherals for the Pocket PC platform, the cf Que 1620 has a flip-up antenna, which can be adjusted to optimize GPS reception -- whether the Pocket PC is secured in a vehicle with a PDA mount (included in the package) or carried by hand. Measuring 2" x 1.7" x 0.5" (HxWxD) and weighing a mere 1.5 oz., it utilizes power from the handheld device's battery, making it a powerful addition for business users operating Pocket PC handhelds.
Expected to be available in May 2004 with a suggested retail price of $267.84, the cf Que 1620 will ship standard with a set of MapSource City Select CDs, a Pocket PC dash mount, an installation CD-ROM, and a quick-reference guide.
