ZEB1 Hand Held Laser Scanner on US Tour Print E-mail
Written by 3D Laser Mapping
Tuesday, 15 April 2014

The world’s first truly mobile, hand held, rapid laser mapping system is taking to the road with a tour of East Coast of America. Commencing on the 27th May 2014 in Boston, Massachusetts with further dates in Virginia and Florida, the ZEB1 roadshow gives the opportunity for anyone with an interest in laser mapping to learn more about and get hands-on with the latest surveying technology.

The ZEB1 system allows laser mapping surveys to be undertaken in previously inaccessible or inhospitable environments especially those without GPS reception. Declared a ‘game changer’ by companies around the world, the technology has already been deployed by law enforcement agencies, mining companies, preservation specialists and surveying companies.

“One of the major differences between ZEB1 and traditional, terrestrial laser mapping systems – other than its ability to operate indoors, underground and other areas of poor GPS reception – is its ease of use!” commented John A. Arnold, VP North America for 3D Laser Mapping. “One user in the UK said ‘it is so easy to use that after just a short introduction any member of the team can pick it up and run with it and it is robust enough to cope with the challenging environments we work in’ while another user commented ‘the results of the ZEB1 test were much better than we could possibly have expected’.”

“This is one of reasons we are taking to the road. Getting hands-on with the ZEB1 is the best way to show its portability, ease of use and speed of data capture. Delegates at the forthcoming roadshows can get up close and even try the ZEB1 for themselves,” continued Arnold.

Developed by CSIRO and commercialised by UK based 3D Laser Mapping, ZEB1 uses robotic technology called Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM). The ZEB1 system includes a lightweight laser scanner mounted on a simple spring mechanism, which continuously scans as the operator walks through the environment. As the scanner loosely oscillates about the spring it produces a rotation that converts 2D laser measurements into 3D fields of view. Its ability to self-localise makes ZEB1 ideally suited for use indoors, underground and in other covered environments, where traditional solutions that utilise GPS don’t function well.

About
ZEB1 was developed by CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency, and is licenced to GeoSLAM (a UK based start-up company). The competitively priced ZEB1, now available from 3D Laser Mapping, allows for fast data capture without any complex set up. ZEB1 is easy to use, truly portable and does not require expensive software or high end computers to process the captured data.
