First-Ever Augmented Reality Mobile Tour of the Antietam Battlefield Print E-mail
Written by Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau
Thursday, 23 August 2012

A high-tech way for visitors to explore the civil war’s bloodiest day, the self-guided mobile tour brings to life historic events of the epic War Between the States.

Bedford, New Hampshire, August 22, 2011 – The soldiers called it “Bloody Lane,”  a quaint country road that was transformed into a gruesome spectacle of carnage during the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. Now visitors to Antietam National Battlefield can use their iPhones to peek back in time for a glimpse of the terror that is impossible to imagine, while standing on that picturesque country road. Triggered by GPS, the tour’s audio-visual presentations explore thirteen tour stops around the battlefield, examining the gripping personal stories of the men, women, and even pets who participated in one of the country’s defining moments.

"More and more travelers are using mobile applications. This terrific new tool is just in time for the Sesquicentennial of the Battle of Antietam and the Maryland Campaign of 1862. Antietam is among the most famous military sites in our nation's history. Visitors can now easily see The Cornfield, West Woods, Bloody Lane and Burnside's Bridge, and enjoy their Antietam experience,” said Thomas Rilford, president and CEO, Hagerstown-Washington County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

“Civil War locations are of vital importance to understanding American history, over 620,000 soldiers and civilians died in a conflict that nearly ripped apart the United States. As we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, we hope that TravelBrains’ guides will encourage people from around the world to learn about this remarkable chapter in America’s past,” states Paul Davis Davis, CEO of TravelBrains.

In addition to the rich multimedia tour stops, the tour is packed with innovative features that will appeal to the entire family. Augmented reality (AR) let’s you use the iPhone’s camera to see things on the battlefield that others can’t, such as General Robert E. Lee standing in front of the visitor center. You can even take your picture with Lee and share it with your friends on Facebook or Twitter. The live travel diary will let you share the pictures, videos, and even the tour stop contents with family back home at the very same moment they are captured. It’s the next best thing to being there.

The Antietam Battlefield tour can be found on the mobile tour platform MyTourGuide www.mytourguide.com/press. To get the tour, download the free MyTourGuide app (Available for iPhones, an Androidversion is coming soon), then enter the tour code ZCM34612. This will take you directly to the Antietam Battlefield tour. Click the play button to explore the battlefield. TravelBrains, the publisher of the tour is offering the tour for FREE on the MyTourGuide platform now until the end of September. Afterward it will cost $9.99.
